Fresno SSF4 Ranbats 2.3: P. Viper is a goddamn liar

Last week, over 30 people crowded a small tea shop in Fresno to watch a certain P. Viper embarrass everyone there who dared to call themselves Street Fighters. Now, beaten but not broken by Mr. "I don't know how to play Tekken," the time has come to try and prove that we're not totally free at this game. You should come by and prove us wrong!

What's a ranbat you ask? Ranbat is shorthand for Ranking Battle, a series of tournaments in which players earn points based on their placings in each tournament. Want to prove that you're the best in Fresno? I'm sorry you feel that way.

Date, time, and location:

Sunday, October 10th

Lollicup
1075 East Bullard Avenue
Fresno, CA 93710-5532
(559) 447-8958

Entry: 10 $ (7 to the pot, 3 to the venue)

Pot will be split 70/20/10 between the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers.

Signups starting at 12:00, tournament will start at 2. If you'd just like to spectate, you're more than welcome to stop by, but be advised that the place can get a bit crowded. Deodorant really isn't optional here.

Games:

- SUPER STREET FIGHTER 4 -

Best 2/3, Double Elimination

Grand Finals: Best 3/5

Loser can change character/ultra, winner cannot swap ultras.

This will be run primarily on PS3, though we will have a 360 available if it is deemed necessary. This will be BYOC (bring your own controller). You didn't get this far in life simply by relying on the kindness of others, so be like the Boy Scouts and come prepared.

- Tekken 6 -

Baby Killer, "The Best Ryu in Fresno," will be running a Tekken 6 tournament alongside our ranbat. We'll post more details on this later.

Shoutouts to running side tournies for almost every fucking game out there, shit was awesome. We're probably going to run a full Tekken 6 tourney next time, get ready!

Fresno SSF4 Ranbats 2.2 - 100 Degree Wakeup DP!

Fresno's second ranbat series kicked off last month with quite the bang, bringing in over 20 people to a small boba shop for the sole purpose of pressing buttons with killing intent. A host of new faces, along with some old and busted ones, made the first ranbat of this season a great time. Complete with a run-in with my good friend Thunderbird, it was truly a day to not forget for at least a month or so. If you're a Street Fighter player living in Central California, you'd be a fool to not show up.

What's a ranbat you ask? Ranbat is shorthand for Ranking Battle, a series of tournaments in which players earn points based on their placings in each tournament. Want to prove that you're the best in Fresno? Such a desire would raise questions about your mental health but, irrespective of your impending CVA, this is the place to prove it! Bragging rights, fight money, and perhaps even a special prize await you if you can acquire the most points this season. Simple enough, right?

This will be run on PS3. We had a 360 setup last time that got used for like 3 matches. This is a BYOC (bring your own controller) tournament, but if you don't have a PS3 stick or pad of your own, bring your best smile and i'm sure someone will let you borrow theirs.

- Tekken 6 -

We've had some interest shown for a Tekken side tournament, and we'd be more than happy to accommodate this. We need to make sure that there would be enough players though, so make sure to sound off if you want this to happen!

Surprise surprise...

We've taken a very long break/vacation but we're still here.

We also have something in store for you Fresno folks in the near future so stay tuned for it.

Street Fighter 4 Event Aug 1 SATURDAY @ Level One Gaming

This is a SF4 event at Level One Gaming that runs from 8PM to around 5-6AM (SF4 all nighter woooooo). Basically it's a lot of free play + 2 singles tournaments + 1 team tourney for $20. The top placers from the first tourney will move onto another tourney within themselves, while the bottom placers will play against each other in separate tourneys. The teams for the team tourney will be decided based on tournament placing. Prizes will be given out, and it should be a whole lot of fun for those interested! For more information, contact Chris or JJ of Level One Gaming at 559-322-4111.

Thanks to FilipinoChamp for showing up and giving Fresno some Dhalsim experience. Thanks to drugs and alcohol the night before for making me play like utter shit at this tournament. With this last ranbat, the top 8 have been decided for the ranbat playoffs. The top 8 players are:

Kaizer - 38 pts
Hoonyo - 27 pts
Ghostmaker - 17 pts
domezy - 14 pts
thejerrbear - 9 pts
FilipinoChamp - 8 pts

Participants will also pay a fee of $7 (5 is added to the $104 pot, 2 for the venue). This fee is subject to change. Payout will be 70/20/10, and tiebreaker will be additional matches between the tied parties (e.g., if two players finish 6-1, they will play an additional best of 3 matches between them).

That's all the info for now. Any changes or clarifications between now and the playoff will be posted. Thanks to everyone who participated in this ranbat season and stay tuned for season two!

Let's show our support...

... for Junio.

As you all probably know, during the tourney, his stick miraculously grew six legs, six arms, and three useless brains.

For his support and dedication in helping create a great SF4 scene in Fresno, we the gamers have decided to donate to the "Get Junio a stick" fund.

Our goal is at least $100 (SE stick + Sanwa replacements). He told me he would get a TE hopefully when he gets his paycheck, but let's all chip in and help alleviate his purchase at least.

Get at me on SRK (fobi0) or AIM (mrfobi0) if you plan on donating. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the support. <3nohomo

My .02 cents.

Good turn out, 31 people. Very surprising.

Might have had more, but with Fuddruckers tomorrow, that might have held off some participants from actually coming.

Still good nonetheless.

And as for you who left with something extra... don't show up again. You're garbage.

Tourney Day

Today is the big day: Fresno Ranbats 1.2 (dubbed The Comeback, but Jerry isn't even coming... boo!). Some major changes involving the tournament:

1. The tournament will now include PS3! We will still have the 360 setups. Remember to bring your own controller or joystick!
2. The entry fee has changed to $10. The breakdown is this: $5 to the tourney pot, $1 to the side pot, $4 to the venue. There are actually some other options:

$13 - gets you 4 slices of pizza and a soda or water
$18 - gets you 4 slices of pizza, a soda or water, an all day free play pass to use on consoles AFTER the tournament has ended.

Well that's all. See you all at the tournament!

Oh and a reminder about where Level One is (You should already know this!):

Can't wait for the next ranbat. How's everyone's game so far? Practicing hard? Let's hold sessions this weekend.

Point System

I thought I'd take the time during class to post about the point system. People who place in the Top 8 of each ranbat will earn points as follows:

• 1st - 8 points
• 2nd - 7 points
• 3rd - 6 points
• 4th - 5 points
• 5th/6th - 3 points
• 7th/8th - 1 point

What's the purpose of obtaining these points? Well, there is an end-of-season side pot that's up for grabs, but it doesn't go to the person with the most points. Instead, the top 8 in ranking will play in one last tournament (date TBD) where the winner takes all. The points will help seed the participants so #1 in points will play #8, #2 will play #7, #3 will play #6, and #4 will play #5.

I haven't decided on any tie-breakers if people end up with the same amount of points (quite likely) so stay tuned for that. If anyone has any ideas for tie-breakers, feel free to discuss it!

That's all for now.
